I’m Jasmine Cooper, and I’ve always had a passion for storytelling and strategic communication. With a degree from the Missouri School of Journalism—one of the top journalism schools in the country—I’ve built a career that spans both broadcast journalism and public relations. Today, I run Cooper Public Relations, where I help brands and organizations craft compelling stories, navigate crises, and gain media coverage that builds trust and credibility.
I started my career in broadcast journalism, as an anchor and producer at Newsy, a nationally syndicated news outlet now known as Scripps News. During my time there, I produced digital content and collaborated with some of the biggest national news brands, including AOL, Time, The Weather Channel, Mashable, and Spin Media. From there, I worked as the morning news anchor, executive producer, and reporter for KSNF-TV in Joplin, Missouri. These experiences gave me a deep understanding of how to craft stories that resonate with a wide audience, both locally and nationally.
In 2018, I transitioned from journalism to public relations, taking on the role of Public Affairs Officer at the Springfield, Missouri Police Department, the third-largest municipality in the state. During my time there, I developed and led the "SPD in PE" program, a groundbreaking partnership between the police department and Springfield Public Schools. This initiative was designed to build positive relationships between officers and students by involving officers in physical education classes. The program was recognized as an award-winning initiative.
Additionally, I served as the department’s spokesperson, handling crisis communications during high-stakes situations such as a mass shooting, widespread protests, and the COVID-19 pandemic. My role required me to manage and communicate effectively under intense pressure, ensuring that the department’s messaging was clear, consistent, and aimed at maintaining public trust during these critical events.
In 2021, I took on a new role as the Director of University Communications and Media Relations at Drury University. My role quickly expanded, and I became the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications. In this position, I was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives of the university’s Office of Marketing and Communications, leading a team of seven dedicated professionals.
One of the highlights of my time at Drury was expanding the university’s media listserv by an incredible 900%, which played a key role in increasing media mentions by over 100% in just two years. This boost in media coverage significantly elevated Drury’s visibility, both locally and nationally, reinforcing its reputation as a leading institution of higher education. Crisis communication was another big part of my role at Drury. I helped revise the crisis communications plan and provided strategic communication counsel during challenging situations, ensuring that the university’s messaging was clear, consistent, and aligned with its values.
I stepped away from my role at Drury in May of 2024 to stay home with my daughter. Now, I've launched Cooper Public Relations so I can continue to do what I love and still have the freedom to spend lots of time with my sweet baby girl, Helena.
As the founder of Cooper Public Relations, I’m combining all the skills I’ve gathered over the years to help brands and organizations navigate the complex media landscape. I believe every client and every situation deserves a uniquely tailored approach. That’s why I take the time to sit down with each client, get to know their organizational needs, and develop a strategy that truly aligns with their goals. Whether it’s media relations, crisis communication, or securing earned media, I’m here to provide the guidance and expertise you need to elevate your brand.
Let's get to work.
